The most widely known know-how used for Large Knowledge is Hadoop. It is used by Yahoo, eBay, LinkedIn & Facebook. It's been inspired from Google publications on Map Reduce, Google FS & Bigtable. As Hadoop can be hosted on commodity hardware (usually Intel PC on Linux with or two CPU & a few TB on HDD, without any RAID replication know-how), it lets them store giant quantity of knowledge ( petabytes or even more) at very low cost (compared to SAN bay systems).
Where did Hadoop come from:
The underlying know-how was invented by Google back in their earlier days so they could usefully index all the rich textural & structural knowledge they were collecting, & then present significant & actionable results to users. There was nothing on the market that would let them do that, so they built their own platform. What issues can Hadoop solve:
The Hadoop platform was designed to solve issues where you have plenty of knowledge â perhaps a combination of complex & structured knowledge â & it does not fit nicely in to tables.
